Sul Ross State University Academics

Are you looking for higher education that has small classes, but still offers the big university lifestyle? Then Sul Ross State University is the school for you. With an average of 2000 students on their main campus in Alpine, Texas, Sul Ross offers personal education with a student to faculty ratio of around 12:1, but still offers all the amenities of larger state universities. SRSU is a public university that offers certificates, associate, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees. Sul Ross is located in the Davis Mountains on 647 acres of land with 93 of those acres dedicated to campus and another 468 acres used for a working ranch. It has 36 undergraduate programs, 23 masters programs and many more certificate and associate degrees. There are three other satellite campuses located in Del Rio, Uvalde, and Eagle Pass, and together they comprise the Rio Grande College. Each location offers some of the degree programs as the main campus in Alpine. Both the Rio Grande College locations and Sul Ross State University are a part of the Texas State University System. SRSU is fully accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Sul Ross offers programs in Agriculture and Natural Resource Sciences, Arts and Sciences, and Professional Studies. It also offers in-class and online courses for those who prefer to do more work online than to sit in the classrooms. Only a few select courses are available for online and some classes may require in-class time as well.

Financial Aid

To offset the cost of tuition, financial aid is available to qualified applicants. The first step to receiving financial aid is to complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This can be completed online or you can print the application and mail it in. Sul Ross State University offers help with filling out the application and any other financial questions that you may have. SRSU also offers scholarships to its students. The deadline to apply for their scholarships is the March 15th before the upcoming school year every year. Grants are also available for qualified students as well as work study programs. The Federal College Work Study program is available to those who are in financial need based upon FAFSA which decides the maximum amount of money that can be made during the work study program. Institutional Student Employment is an opportunity for students to work part-time on campus to earn extra money. This work program is not dependent upon financial need.

Sul Ross State University Students

Sul Ross State University has two residence halls on campus, efficiency apartments and family housing available. Even though SRSU is located in the mountains, it is still close to shopping and entertainment. A great way to get involved in your university, to meet fellow students, and to open yourself up to new experiences is to join a student club or organization. Sul Ross has many to offer including club sports, departmental organizations, honor societies, leadership organizations, religious organizations, special interest organizations, and temporary organizations.

Athletics

The Sul Ross State University Lobo’s play in the NCAA division III athletics and offer baseball, football, men and women’s basketball, softball, volleyball, cross country, men and women’s tennis and track teams. The football team enjoys playing on the 4000-seat Jackson Field, the baseball team plays on the 1400-seat Kokernot Field, and the other teams make use of the 3500-seat Pete P. Gallagher center.

Sul Ross State University athletics may be most known for its Rodeo division. Proud originators of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association, SRSU offers a Rodeo Organization open to all students and competes nationally with other colleges 10 times throughout the school year. For those looking to compete you must be apart of the rodeo program and all competitors are chosen by the coach before each competition. The costs of the program are offset by fundraising and fees, and they offer seven scholarships each year to help students pay for the program not covered by fundraising.
