I will be graduating in July 2011, The new building is way to small and you will have to go back to the old school to do some of your labs. The aircraft's are old very old and missing a LOT of part. In your reciprocating powerplant overhaul class you will take apart a old worn out engine and rebuild it with the same worn out parts. The school is way way to cheap to replace anything. They have a bunch of unused space that they try to fill with junk planes you'll never touch, they're just there to look at. In your turbine overhaul class you get to run a Saberliner jet up. They make it sound really cool but it's seriously flipping a couple switches and then shutting it back off. You will not tear down a turbine at all in this school! The quality of instructors is pretty hit or miss. Most of the instructors are new because they old instructors can't take the management at the school. While I was at the school they had to fire an instructor due to drug problems (he was caught huffing paint thinner in his van during class) make sure to ask your recruiter about Bill Roether and see how fast they change the subject. The school likes to try to make people that get accepted feel special and blow lots of smoke. I've been in many different classes and it feels a lot like high school. I've seen people constantly fail test or miss tons of hours and still be allowed to continue in the program even though the school will tell you in orientation that you wont be able to. The school will hold your hand so they get the $30+ grand in tuition and you'll get a certificate of completion but with out your A&P license it doesn't mean anything. If I'd known that Lansing Community College has a aviation I would have most definitely gone there and saved over $10k in tuition and work on planes that are still airworthy and more modern. One last thing the school definitely has a drug, theft, and violence problems. Do not live in the dorms they are very ghetto and people get their cars and apartments broken into quite often.

It's college decision time, would like to enter the aviation field. Would my money be better spent attending Western MI Univ. Aviation program or MIAT? Attended the open house at MIAT. It's alot of money, and WMU is in my hometown. After reading some of the comments I'm having dobts, but then again looking at some of the other attendies I can see why some job placement may not be waiting upon graduation. Some just appeared fat and stupid.

Great Power Technology and Aviation program

The School has a great reputation, and its sad that they are losing that good name fast. The new location is nice but is not large enough to handle the student body, the tuition is high for what you get and that is new offices, not aircraft equipment to train with. "just take a tour and you'll see the students sitting at workbenches with books, not tools" those are the classrooms! you'll work on what they have available if at all. One look on the floor and you'll see the mock ups used for training, only afterwards you'll learn that there is alot missing from the equipment. The school is better suited as a movie production set, as everything on display is used just for that, with having to not only purchase at a high mark up the shirts they make you wear, you also must tuck them in and wear safety glasses while sitting at a table doing book work. MOST OF WHAT YOU DO IS BOOKWORK! The hands on is very little!! You can do better by going to a school that provides classrooms and provides the proper items to gain the information you need to learn. This school has its good points and I will say that you will learn, however that is only if you do alot on your own and make out of it what you can. Do your own research first and look into what you need to know to be an A&P Mechanic, just look at the books you need to study with and you'll see that most of study is in the books, However you need hands on training to get the insight of how to do certain things, and sad to say that improvment is way overdue and perhaps even an understatment at this point at MIAT unless you want to work in an office, then they have a beautiful climate controlled work stations/offices with some of the nicest chairs, desks and office equipment that any paper-pusher could ever dream of! The offices are very nice!

Awesome school! The new campus is beautiful. I am an AMT student (aviation) and am graduating in June. I have interviewed with Pentastar Aviation, USA Jet, and FedEx cargo. I have received offers from all three companies. Kind of nice to have options! :) FedEx seems like the best fit for me so I will probably have a hand in packages being delivered safely by plane all over the world very shortly! MIAT is a great experience and I am so glad that I chose this path. I graduated from Eastern Mich with an environmental degree, and I not once used that degree. Eastern could have cared less about helping me with a job. MIAT is so passionate about their training and helping with careers after wards. I was concerned about what I would be doing after wards, and where I was going to end up, but they have made me who I am today, and I feel proud of the accomplishments and where I am headed. Thanks to Chad Truskowski in career services, and Tina for all of your help. see you at graduation!

The school is what you make of it. Of the 8 or so instructors I had, two were fabulous, handful mediocre, and one just did just what the curriculum spelled out. Many of the instructors are not happy with management. I saw a handful come in and leave unfortunately. Job placement professionals (5 of them) are nowhere in keeping up with what the recruiters said. Once a week I get an email with some job opportunities. I find many many more on my own. Over promise and under deliver in so many areas. Hands-on in many of the classes is not much more than handouts and changing classrooms, seriously. That was a very big disappointment. Take everything the recruiters say with a grain of salt. Again, it is what you make of it including finding your own job. Stay on the good side of job placement employees. It appears they are partial to some students over the other.

I am a graduate of MIAT and i was looking for an alumni page and found this site. I work at Delta Airlines at Detroit Metro (DTW). MIAT is by and large the best Aviation school in the country. If you are considering a career in aviation, i will be the first to tell you that you will not find a better career out there. it is not for everyone, you have to be a hard worker, and be responsible. my signature insures on a daily basis that all of the passengers that board my planes are in a 100% safe airworthy aircraft. That is a big responsibility. i didnt know anything about airplanes, but was always interested in them, and it is a pleasure to be a part of such an incredible industry. I dont usually write reviews, but this school has provided me the opportunity to wake up every single morning with the urge to be a part of something huge. i cant wait to go to work everyday. i literally cant wait. when im not at work and see aircraft in the sky, i know what type of aircraft it is, what kind of turbine/jet it is running, and by the tail number, where it is going, and who is responsible for its safe departure. you will not find a better career. it is not like a typical "mechanic" job. you could eat a fillet mignon off of the floor in my work area. if there is a spec of grease on the floor in my work area, that means that something is wrong with the aircraft. MIAT will change your world. i work with 27 MIAT grads. how many people are in my department? 36. the schools placement department is unreal and ongoing. i started off with duncan aviation and didnt like it. i went back to the career center at MIAT and they placed me with Delta, and i cannot see myself working for another company. they wanted at least 4 years experience working with 747's, and/or DC-10 aircraft (which i had zero experience working with), and when they saw that i was an MIAT graduate, they literally word for word said "you're an MIAT grad? excellent, you will be starting on the flight line on March 3rd". Do it, it will be the best decision you will ever make. Good luck p.s. the FAA test is not easy, study your a## off. MIAT has a capstone course to help you, utilize it, its free!

Just graduated! Great school, loved the professors, really helpful administrative staff. All around an awesome life changing experience. I almost wish i was still attending. I miss all of my classmates. I was offered a positions with next era energy(formely Florida Power and Light) before i even graduated. Hired in at 60K. I dont know many jobs right out of college that you can make that kind of money right away. i love my job, and couldnt ask for a better school to get me there

Great school. A little down time in some clasees but for the most part a really good school. i used to work at a steel mill and got laid off. i didnt know much about alternative energy or wind before i checked into this school, but it didnt matter, the instructors are awesome, and the classes are small enough for individual help. i now work for a company called Vestas one of the largest wind companies in the world and i love what i do. i have a lot of people at MIAT to thank for where i am at today

I am a student at miat in new boston. i go to the power institute. i am about to graduate in september and had a great experience at the school. the instructors are really good and the departments are helpful. i was reading the posts below and im not going to say names but i am pretty sure who these guys are. they messed around all day and now they probably got kicked out and are unhappy. i already have been looking for jobs and i cant wait to graduate and start working. the only complaint i have is the breaks. they could be longer. instructor gilbert is the best. he knows his stuff, if you get him you will like him alot. i would recomend this school

I have a bachelors degree of Science from the aviation department at Western Michigan University, and just recently finished my 12 month Power Technology Program at the Michigan Institute of Aviation and Technology. I must say that this is one of the best schools around. their career center was very supportive. The comments below are obviously from unmotivated and non-aggresive individuals, because I had a job with Siemens Wind before I graduated. You can't rely on your college to put you into an interview, and magically get a job. They are simply there to support you and help you. Not get the job for you. You have to do it on your own. I would recommend this school to anyone interested in an awesome and growing industry. My office is 330 ft in the sky! I love it! I am an ex Ford line leader and I would never turn back from this amazing career.

I have to agree with the last post. I am currently attending the Power Technology side and have had a similar experience. It is a new program and they are making it up as it goes along. The school has a lot of room for improvement. You definitely have to find your own jobs. The "sales people" will tell you that companies are hiring left and right from the school, and they just are NOT. There are better alternatives at HFCC.

I would like to remain unidentified because I have nothing nice to say about this school. The try to get your money any way thay can and they did not do a very good job. I personally graduated from this school. The intructors were not very good because they were always coming and going. Some cared somewhat some didnt care at all. The school costs over $25,000. They preach about their job placement and I have to say it was of now help. I found my job on my own. It was a better paying job as well as better experience. The office staff is very rude and unprofessional. The school provides little help of what you need in the real world. I had to study for months on my own to be able to pass the FAA practical tests. The equipment is also terrible. Nothing is actually functional. No planes fly and only two other barely run. All examples are missing parts and dont give you a real sense of what an aircraft is. I could write about it all day but if I could just tell one person not to waste their money at this place I would feel like I am saving someone. I wish someone would have told me about this place.

OK so heres how it goes you come in for this tour and they preach about how its a real world experience and if you manage to make it threw this coarse which they tell you you can then you will get to experience this great world of aviation. youll go through and they will point out the things like there new hanger floor with all this great hands on stuff. well if you like looking threw books all day then this is the right kind of hands on for you. Hopefully you have gotten used to reading with glasses beacuase no matter what your doing you must have them on even if your eating your lunch outside of the break room when everyone is gone. the instuructors you meet have there ups and downs youll meet some that will go out of there way to help you which are normally the ones that wont be there long due to that fact that the school has realized that it doesnt matter about your success but how much money you can put in there account.most of the other students you will meet there arnt there for good reasons wether it be their parents forced them there or they were just finding a way to occupy their time.you will find the few occasional one who is there for the right reasons and will get there FAA liscience which is like maybe 3 out of 30. the equipment there is enough to learn what you need to with the proper leasons from a instructor but if you just look at it yourself it wont make any since due to the fact that its been qoute qoute studentized when really the school wont put money into the stuff. If you do go find somewhere else to live outside of the appartments. youd probably end up being alot safer living in down town detroit with the thugs then in there.they dont ever fix anything and the minutes somethings wrong they want you to pay for it. i went 6 months without a fire exstinguisher they finally replaced it after i set something on fire lol. ooo yeah if you do park there make sure you either have a high quality alarm system or at least leave your car unlocked so your windows dont get broke.but if your serious about getting your liscience you can accomplish that hear but you better be willing to do nothing but that and focus on it yourself cause the school is just focused on you graduating and you will realize this when you watch how students get spoon feed and relentless amounts of trys to pass the test and labs.
