Albany Tech, located at 1704 S. Slappey Boulevard in Albany, Georgia, got its start back in 1961 as a vocational-technical school. Designed to provide local students with technical training and education, Albany has been assisting with helping job candidates acquire the necessary skills to become successful candidates for openings in evolving job markets. It changed its name to its present moniker in 2000, after it began offering students Associate degrees. Presently, there are more than 3,000 full-time students enrolled in one of the seven campuses of Albany Technical College. Around 2,500 more students are enrolled in seminars and part-time courses, continuing education, business preparation, and teleconferences. The school helps address the needs of students, businesses, and the local community, by awarding successful students diplomas, degrees, and technical certificates. The school is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Financial Aid
Financial aid available through Albany Technical College comes in several different forms. Scholarships, loans, work-study, and grants are all available to students.
The Hope Scholarship and Grant programs are funded through the support of the Georgia Lottery, and assist Georgia residents who are in need of financial aid. A minimum grade point average must be upheld in order to continue to receive the aid.
The Academic Competitiveness Grant is available for citizens of the United States who demonstrated excellence in high school, qualify for a Federal Pell Grant, and are presently enrolled full-time in an associate degree program. In order to re-qualify for the grant, students must keep up a 3.0 grade point average.
The Federal Work Study program is based on need, and offers students on-campus job placements in order to help defray the cost of attendance. Certain restrictions apply, in particular a student must be not enrolled in a program which awards a certificate.
The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant is based on need, and is not available for students working towards a certificate or enrolled full-time in another educational institution.
Rehabilitation Services helps students with mental, emotional, or physical disabilities.
The Georgia Fatherhood Program assists parents to continue their education.

Local Community
The main branch of Albany Technical College is located in Albany, Georgia, a close-knit Southern community with many historic points of interest. A few such points include museums, concert spaces, and parks. Some local favorites are the Albany Ballet Theater, the Albany Museum of Art, the Flint RiverQuarium, the Parks at Chehaw, and the Thronateeska Heritage Center. Albany landmarks famous in this small community include the Confederate Memorial Park, the Royal Air Force Memorial, the old Rosenberg Brothers Department Store, which is presently the home of The Albany Herald newspaper, the Ray Charles statue, and the John A. Davis house.
The area where Albany is located sits on land previously inhabited by Creek Indians, and later by settlers led by Nelson Tift, an entrepreneur from Connecticut. The fertile Georgia soil is prime for cotton growing, as well as other agricultural products.
Students who complete their training studies at Albany Technical often find employment in one of the area’s major employers, which include Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, Proctor and Gamble, Teleperformance USA, BellSouth Telecommunications, and Palmyra Medical Centers. Another significant employer is Sherwood Pictures, one of the largest producers of Christian films in the United States.
